first time climbers

New to climbing? No problem! Vertical Hold Gym welcomes both beginning and experienced climbers. Vertical Hold Gym offers four different areas of activity: top roping, lead climbing, bouldering, and fitness training.

Top Roping

Top roping is a style of climbing in which the climber is securely attached to a rope, which then passes through an anchor system at the top of the climb, and down to a belayer at the foot of the climb. This type of climbing is very welcoming for beginners, and the fantastic routes will challenge experienced top ropers.

Lead climbing

Lead climbing is a more advanced type of climbing. In lead climbing the climber creates anchor points during the ascent by clipping into quickdraws for protection. This style of climbing is recommended for intermediate/advanced climbers. Ask our friendly front desk staff for a lead lesson; or if you are an experienced lead climber for a lead certification.

Bouldering is a form of climbing without the use of ropes or harnesses. What bouldering lacks in pure height, it makes up with the strength and technique required to send a route. While bouldering can be done without any equipment whatsoever, climbing shoes really help secure footholds. For beginners, bouldering can result in quick increases in strength. For advanced climbers, bouldering requires precise footwork placing and strength.

Your safety

Safety is key to enjoying any adventure outing. At Vertical Hold we provide a safety conscious environment where the beginning climber can learn with confidence and the experienced climber can push his/her ability to the limits. All top-rope belay stations are equipped with Pretzel "Gri-Gri" devices which allow even children (13 years or older) to provide a safe belay. Out lead areas are peppered with beefy 3/8 inch bolts, so lead climbers are always just a clip away from a safe anchor.
