Frequently Asked Questions

Does a first time climber need an appointment?

No. No appointment is necessary and all customers are offered a free belay lesson.

How old do you have to be to climb?

Vertical Hold Gym has no age restrictions to climb; however, in order to belay you must be at least 13 years of age and demonstrate proper belay technique to a staff member before climbing. Of course, we always offer a free belay lesson to anyone who will belay.

Why do you use rocks instead of padded flooring?

Vertical Hold Gym selected smooth, small, round, river gravel as a landing surface. The rocks allow the force exerted by a fall to be evenly absorbed and spaced by the landing surfaces. Crash pads are also available.

how do you mark your routes?

We mark our routes with colored holds and matching tape. Every color represents a graded path (“route”) for the climber to ascend. Virtually every top rope has four routes including a very easy route; the remaining routes vary from easy (5.8) to difficult (5.12+). The boulder routes range from V0 to V11.

HOW ARE YOUR ROUTES SET AND GRADED?

Our route setters never stop! Each route setter is an accomplished outdoor climber who has demonstrated the ability to translate outdoor climbing experience into indoor route setting expertise. While outdoor route grades are based on a route's single hardest move (the crux), we try to make all moves of equal difficulty. Therefore, for example, a 5.10(b) rating will feature 5.10(b) moves.

DO I HAVE TO USE CLIMBING SHOES?

Climbers are not required to use rock climbing shoes; however, climbing shoes give the advantage of a stiff sole making it easier to climb on a variety of climbing holds.

DO I HAVE TO BRING MY OWN ROPE?

No, we provide all ropes/including lead ropes.

DO I NEED TO FURNISH MY OWN BELAY DEVICE?

No, every top rope has a "Gri-Gri" belay device. We find that "Gri-Gris" are very forgiving, easy and intuitive to use. In the lead climbing area, we furnish certified lead climbers an ATC belay device.

DO CLIMBING PARTNERS NEED TO WEIGH THE SAME?

No. In our top rope area, climbers of different weights are fine to belay each other without the need to ground anchor. In our lead areas we have ground anchors, if needed.

WHAT DOES A GROUP RESERVATION PROVIDE?

A group reservation includes two hours of climbing followed by thirty minutes in the party area. Every group has at least one dedicated instructor. A group is reserved by paying a $50 non-refundable deposit. Call for details.

what should i bring for my party?

Vertical Hold Climbing Gym provides a designated party area, tables, chairs, and table cloths for your party reservation. Party hosts provide any utensils, party snacks, and meals. Group hosts are more than welcome to bring any non-alcoholic beverages and food of their choice.

does Vertical HOld offer boy scout merit badges?

Yes. Our instructors are registered with the boy scouts and are certified to teach the BS merit badge program. This program consists of two-hour sessions (four hours total) which can be done in one day. The cost is $30 per climber (min. 6 climbers).

does Vertical Hold host fund rasing events?
